Denton Cottier & Daniels Through the Years
Few companies are able to stand the test of time... but Denton Cottier & Daniels has found a way. For over 185 years, they have been selling pianos and organs across the state of New York.
It all started in 1827 with a man named James D. Sheppard (pictured below), founder of Denton Cottier and Daniels. Sheppard brought Western New York its first piano up the Erie Canal on a mule drawn boat. At this time, pianos were still fairly new, as they had recently evolved in the 1700s from a harpsichord. From there, it didn't take long for it to become one of the most popular instruments used around the world.
Sheppard placed his piano in the old Eagle Tavern, located on Main Street in Buffalo, to display his instruments to the public. He later opened a store located downtown where he was able to sell instruments.
Years down the road in the 1850's, Hugh Cottier (pictured below) moved from New York City to Buffalo and became a partner with Sheppard. 1863 brought newcomer Robert Denton into the firm but not long after, the partners were shaken by the passing of James D. Sheppard in 1867. This prompted the name change to Cottier & Denton until twenty years later when William Daniels was made third partner.
For the next one hundred years, Denton Cottier & Daniels was housed at 32 Court Street by a number of different managers and owners. In 1999, the store was moved to the present home at 460 Dodge Road in Getzville, New York.
Fast forward to today where owner Jim Trimper (pictured below) has been acting and CEO and President of Denton Cottier & Daniels since 1983. The success of this establishment has shown that businesses can stand the test of time when providing excellent service, superior quality, and a knack for tradition!
This exciting history and tradition of Denton Cottier & Daniels has allowed them to be the oldest Steinway dealer of pianos and organs in the world – a title they plan to hold for years to come!
